Green potatoes will make you sick. I used a bag of baby potatoes in my pot roast this week. Several hours after eating my serving, I was feeling a little off — chalked it up to fatigue. By bedtime I was feeling worse and worse. It actually felt like I had just had stomach flu for a few days and was recovering — a kind of refreshing pressure or openness in my ears, a bit of headache and whatever — faint delirium. Towards morning there was nausea and maybe a little fever. It’s like I was having the flu in reverse, going from a feeling of recovering to a feeling of full-on flu.

That day I went to my brother’s house for Christmas. I felt fairly normal most of the day. That evening I came hoe and hat another serving of the pot roast. I only ate one or two of the potatoes, but of course whatever was in the potatoes was in the gravy, and therefore in every bite I took.

After a few hours I was having that near-flu experience again: a little feverish, a little nauseous.

Today I abstained entirely. The flu-like sensations have been mild and intermittent. A real scientist would have himself another bowl of the stuff tonight to confirm his findings. Not me, though.
